Joyful Noise Drums

i wanted to custom paint my yamaha rydeen drum set flat black. however imkind of scared because the shell is covered in a sort of plastic black wrapping. im not sure if i should take it off and paint the mahogany or leave the plastic and put the paint on top of that. if anyone could tell me which would be better and how to go about painting it that would be great.
