Choosing acoustic beginner guitars is a major task for people new to guitar playing. It is true that steel strings can slice your fingers and it takes some time away from the guitar to let them heal, but at the same time, if you are faced with the choice between a decent steel string guitar and an unplayable piece of crap with nylon strings, then take the steel string, and just be careful not to drag your left hand fingers along the strings.
Without going into too much detail about the pros and cons of various brands and model, here's a few decent guitars that you could look out for at your local music store or on ebay: Takamine, Epiphone, Alvarez, Yamaha, Ibanez. These are all good quality guitars that will last you through your initial stage as a beginner guitar player plus a few years neglected under the bed. Even though you can buy good guitars online, they could suffer from being shipped from one country to another, plus buying from a store or through local classifieds means you can see what you are buying.
